I joined the Navy in Sept of 1951. Wanted "aircraft" so I was sent to VX-4 @ Point Mugu, in '52. Got to NAS, Adak, Alaska in the parachute loft, then to Milling, Tennessee to become an "Aviation Metalsmith" I graduated, 6th out of 73, and choose HAWAII as an assignment. I flew as a " Flight Steward" for VR-21 in R6D's, ("DC-6", civilian designation)out of Barbers Pt. Oahu, HI. (Not much "metalsmithing" LOL.) I turn 90 on Mar 24, 12 days from now. I still love the Navy. RW
In 1956, at age 12, I lived on NAS Sangley Point in the Philippine Islands. Always enamored with airplanes, I imprinted on the Cougars, Banshees, and Skyraiders then being deployed. Not able to be a Naval Aviator because I was nearsighted, I instead became an aeronautical engineer and general aviation pilot. Now retired, I write books and monographs on U.S. Navy aircraft.
